Youth Regained

1 min read

The YOUTH REGAINED project is about the social disintegration of youth (juvenile) offenders across Europe, more specifically about the struggle they go through to find a job. Because of their lack of employability, studies show that the vast majority of youth offenders are reoffending after their release. Juvenile offenders are more likely to struggle with issues such as poverty, housing and so on, given that they are less likely to find a job. Crucial for their lack of employability is their lack of education (due to the fact that they are sentenced) and their awareness about key competences they need to develop to increase their employability.

The project aims to strengthen youth offenders’ soft skills through high quality educational material on the development of key employability skills. The purpose will be realized through the following objectives:

  1. Strengthen ex-convicted young offenders’ competences and basic skills in order to ease their
transition to adulthood and support their integration in the labour market.
  2. Develop activities focusing on the strengthening of inclusion and employability of young
offenders as young people with fewer opportunities.
  3. Support CSOs focusing on the protection and the re-integration of young offenders and
encourage young people at risk of marginalisation to regain their life and place in the society.
  4. Engage CSOs and stakeholders from the business sectors and educate them to eliminate the
stereotypes related to young offenders post release employability.

Concrete results in terms of project outputs, training activities and multiplier events leading to the broader strategic outcomes are listed below:

  • Research and training
  • Development of a Good practice guide used to raise awareness
  • Studies to assess the needs, key competences, and life-skills that young offenders lack
  • Development of an e-course, which will support and complete gaps in life-long learning
education and will provide valuable soft-skills
  • Workshops and training
  • Provision of tailor-made training engaging minors and youth at risk of offending/re-offending
    and relevant CSOs
  • Summarize results into an awareness raising and policy toolkit
  • Digital tools and network
  • Host the learning resources developed previously in the project (i.e., e-course, toolkit)

Within this project, 3 results were developed:

  1. A needs assessment of key competences and life-skills that child offenders lack and if acquired their employability success rate would be considerably increased.
  2. An e-learning/e-course providing soft-skills which include but are not limited to the following categories: a) communication; b) teamwork; c) work ethic; d) positive attitude; e) critical thinking; and f) leadership.
  3. Organise educational and training workshops in partnership countries engaging ex-convicted child offenders and relevant CSOs and summarize their results into an awareness raising and policy toolkit for CSOs and youth organisations related to child offenders.

The project was led by CPIP(Romania) and had partners in Greece (KMOP), Cyprus (Synthesis), Ireland (Redial), Lithuania (SIF) and Spain (Accion Laboral).
