Reading literary texts is one of the privileged activities in the context of formal education, given the revolution that can operate in the life of those who manage to appropriate it, incorporating it into other life practices, albeit sparsely. It may sound cliché, but reading effectively broadens, in one way or another, people’s horizons. Prison education includes human rights and the principle of human dignity. Thus, the penal remission arises, which gives the inmate the opportunity to shorten the time imposed by the sentence, through work, study and, recently, disciplined by Recommendation no. 44/2013, of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the remission of sentence for reading. This text, which aims to present the implementation and execution of the “Remição pela Leitura” Project, in the Prison Unit of Imperatriz-MA, as a legal institute with a resocializing function based on literary texts, highlights the Project “Interactive reading: habits of reading and reflection as conditions for the remission of the sentence”.
